Which bicycle drive is suitable for the folding bike?
Folding bike with belt or chain – that is the question!
The belt drive is a relatively new alternative to the classic chain drive. However, this type of drive has only really gained popularity in the last few years. But what exactly are the differences? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the individual drive methods? And: Which drive is perhaps better suited for the folding bike? You will find out all this in this article.Chain vs. belt drive – these are the differences
The bicycle chain is a real classic - and is therefore still the dominant form of bicycle drive today. Simply put, the basic principle is based on a metal chain that transfers power to the wheel via pinions. A belt drive, on the other hand, is a belt made of carbon fiber that runs over the so-called pulleys and in this way transfers the leg power to the wheel.
Advantages and disadvantages of the chain drive
Perhaps the biggest advantage of a chain drive is the ability to open the chain at any point. This is not possible with a belt, which makes both repairing and installing a chain drive much easier. Another advantage is that a chain drive can be combined with all types of gears compared to a belt drive. The chain drive is also somewhat more efficient because, compared to a belt drive, a lot of leg power is transferred to the wheel with this type of drive. However, this only works if the chain is in good condition and is regularly looked after. This is where we come to the disadvantages. If a chain is to function well and last a long time, it must be looked after accordingly. The care and maintenance effort for a chain is relatively high because it must be regularly cleaned, oiled and protected from dirt and moisture.Advantages and disadvantages of the belt drive
One of the greatest strengths of the belt drive is its long service life. Due to the low wear, the belt lasts on average two to three times longer than a chain. Thanks to its carbon reinforcement, the belt does not wear out either. Regularly replacing the chain and the corresponding pinions is no longer necessary, which frequent riders will be particularly pleased about. Maintenance and care are also eliminated with the belt: Since neither oil nor grease is required, this type of drive is completely dirt-free. The ideal solution if you like to wear something a little more stylish or mainly wear an office outfit. Last but not least, the belt drive is also particularly quiet. The disadvantage of this type of drive is that it cannot be combined with all types of gears, but only with a hub or bottom bracket gear. As already mentioned, assembly and repair of the belt drive are also much more complex, since a belt cannot be opened, unlike a chain. Last but not least, the purchase costs of a belt drive are higher than those of a chain.
Which drive for the folding bike?
Folding bikes are the ideal vehicle for commuters who travel a lot by public transport. Distances between stops and starting or destination points can be covered quickly and comfortably. The flexible bike can be folded up compactly and can therefore fit into even the smallest of storage spaces. Goodbye, additional tickets and closed times. Since you could come into contact with the drive during the folding process itself or when transporting the folded bike, a chain drive could potentially get your hands or clothing dirty. This could make the belt drive an interesting alternative to the folding bike.
